Where a wall is perpendicular to the roofing slip pieces of step flashing under the siding.

Roofing up to a wall.

I made this video this morning and i hope it help explain the flashing wall detail where the siding meets the roof. There have always been problems with the flashing details at head walls rake walls and chimneys especially if stucco brick or stone veneer is used. We ask for 6 inches up the wall. Step 7 flashing your chimney.

The omittance of the termination metal leaves an opening at the top of the coping and allows for moisture infiltration at the space between the parapet. The most common mistake at this intersection is to allow the metal coping to but up to the wall without the application of termination metal. A critical and often overlooked design detail is at the termination of a parapet coping at a wall. Here is an attempt though maybe not a very good one to make the roof flashing serve also as a through the wall flashing with a tile roof.

As a rule of thumb we expect to use two courses of membrane if the roof overhang exceeds 8 inches. Sometime the through wall flashing can be the same as the counter flashing. Apply a flashing piece then a shingle then flashing as you would apply step flashing for a chimney. Install it through the entire thickness of the brick veneer.

Through wall flashing is necessary to redirect moisture that has penetrated the veneer back to the outside. All exterior wall coverings whether it is wood siding vinyl siding brick or stone veneer stucco etc. Depending on the manufacturer s spec some roofing materials may require an ice barrier membrane on the entire roof. If the roof meets a wall that is parallel to the shingles roof up to the wall then slip a long continuous piece of flashing under the siding and on.

The flat roofing material must go up the wall a minimum of 12 or up the wall and over the top of the wall if the wall is less than 12 high. Roof to wall flashing.
